Tragic Truck Accident Leaves Two Dead and Two In Critical Condition
Last week a truck involving a semitruck and a pickup left two people dead and two others in serious condition. The incident happened on Buckeye Road in west Phoenix. A semitruck was heading westbound when it turned into oncoming traffic. A pickup truck coming from the other direction collided with the semitruck.
Inside the pickup truck was a man, woman, young girl, and a small boy. The man and the young girl died at the scene and the woman and boy were transported to the hospital and were in critical condition.
At the time of this writing, police did not know if the truck driver was impaired or distracted at the time of the crash but will continue their investigation.
At Lorona Mead, we know that larger commercial trucks pose major risks to other people around them, especially when operated improperly. If you need a Phoenix truck accident attorney, you can count on our team to get the compensation you deserve.
The Risks of Large Trucks
There are plenty of large trucks in and around Phoenix. They perform valuable functions for our economy. Consider some of the following:
- Eighteen wheelers
- Dump trucks
- Garbage trucks
- Package delivery trucks
Those are just a few of the many large trucks we see daily. If we turn to the Arizona DOT, we know that there were more than 10,000 crashes involve some kind of larger truck in the state during the latest reporting year.
Preventing Vehicle Failure
With vehicles of this size, it is vital that the owners, whether a company or individual, perform regular inspections and maintenance to prevent vehicle failure on one of the following systems:
- Tires and wheels
- Suspension
- Lighting
- Connecting parts
- Steering
- Brakes
Drivers can lose control while moving a high speed if something goes wrong. This could lead to devastating crashes.
Importance of Driver Training
Driver training is also important. All drivers should obtain their commercial driver's license and operate responsibly at all times. This includes following all laws and regulations related to large truck operation (hours they can drive each day and how much weight they can carry).
Truck drivers should also never operate while under the influence of drugs or alcohol or while distracted by phones, devices, or anything else inside the vehicle.
The Severity of Truck Accidents
Accidents involving large trucks can become mass casualty incidents due to their size and weight. Regular passenger vehicles usually do not hold up well in these accidents.
