Surviving the Aftermath: Understanding Tragic Collisions, the State's Reality, and What to Do If It Happens to You

Tragic Collision Leaves Young Woman with Life-Threatening Injuries

A young girl’s life has been forever altered because of an car accident that took place at the end of December. Police say that a Toyota Camry, driven by a 22-year-old-man, was turning left onto 43rd Avenue from Thunderbird Road when a Mercury Mountaineer being driven down the opposite side of Thunderbird collided with it.

The Mercury rolled as a result of the collision and the 18-year-old women driving it was ejected from the vehicle. She was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and the five other passengers in the vehicle with her were treated for minor injuries. There were four passengers in the Toyota, all uninjured in the crash. The driver of the Toyota was arrested for suspicion of DUI and police are awaiting toxicology results.

At Lorona Mead, we hope that everyone makes a full recovery. If you or a loved one have been injured due to another driver’s negligence, you can count on us when you need a Phoenix car accident attorney.

The State’s Reality

The latest reporting year in Arizona shows us that there was a total of 127,064 accidents and that out of those, there were:

  • 55,474 injuries
  • 1,000 fatalities

We need to consider the costs of these accidents. While many accidents cause only minor injuries, this can still mean major medical bills. Simple procedures often cost thousands of dollars. Now, imagine how much treatment costs for major injuries. We often represent accident victims who have sustained the following:

  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Spinal cord trauma
  • Internal organ damage
  • Broken and dislocated bones
  • And more

The costs for these injuries can enter into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. This can become more than most families can handle, especially if insurance companies do not offer enough to cover all of the expenses.

Why They Happen

As the story above shows us, impaired drivers are a major problem for the state. In fact, they are responsible for more than 30% of the traffic-related fatalities. Anyone who makes the choice to get behind the wheel while impaired by drugs or alcohol needs to be held accountable both criminally and civilly.

Unfortunately, impaired drivers are only part of the problem. We know that those who speed and drive aggressively cause accident every day, as do those who are distracted by their phones or other devices.

If It Happens To You
